The Alpengold Showband Group

The Group comprises 3 separate, yet quite distinctive bands.

The Oompah Band was the first in the Group and was formed by Bill Singleton. Bill is no newcomer to oompah music. As an ex professional musician he ran his own band in the UK before retiring to Spain some years ago.

The Alpengold Showband was formed out of the Oompah Band to provide concert band music to suit a completely different audience. The Band of some 35 musicians is run by a small committee with Bas Starbuck as its Musical Director.

As diverse again is Just Brass, which was formed out of the Oompah Band and the Alpengold Showband in 2002 with Gordon Higginbottom as its Musical Director.

Alpengold Showband

Music knows no bounds - This is the philosophy of our group of some 30-35 musicians who meet weekly to rehearse a wide variety of music in order to provide programmes for concerts, clubs, associations, fetes, and fund raising for charities. Their repertoire, which varies widely, includes marches, light classics, Broadway and West End productions, and carols.

The members come from a wide variety of backgrounds from countries within the EU. Their standard of musicianship ranges from ex school band players through to military and ex professional. They welcome new players with some experience, preferably with a minimum playing standard of Grade 5 (see details below for enquiries).

Basil Starbuck, the Musical Director, endeavours to attain a high standard of playing with his rehearsal and band training, which he acquired during his service in the British Army Music Corps. In addition Basil also attended the renowned Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall where he studied trumpet and cornet as well as harmony, instrumentation and conducting.

Just Brass

The band was originally formed in 2002 as a quartet of brass players from The Vega Baja Big Band and Alpengold Showband. They enjoy playing traditional brass band style quartet music.

The quartet has progressed (under the leadership of their MD, Gordon Higginbottom) and now have nine permanent musicians playing a variety of music specially composed or orchestrated and arranged by Gordon.

Gordon, to quote the BBC, "is almost legendary". His performances as soloist, tutor, adjudicator and lecturer are many, and include a vast number of countries as diverse as Mexico, Japan, Australia, etc.

Gordon has been professor at the Leeds College of Music and the London College of Music, and is currently an associate tutor at Salford University and examiner at the Royal Northern College of Music.

He retired as Promotions Manager with Yamaha-Kemble Music (UK) Limited before moving here to Spain to live.

One of Gordon's last professional gigs was as an invited musician for the soundtrack of the film "Evita", and since coming to Spain as an invited soloist in Mexico.

As a player, Gordon has enjoyed a varied career having appeared with most of the UK's top brass bands, London Philharmonic Orchestra and a regular broadcaster as a member of the BBC band and session musician.

The aim of Just Brass is to play music that entertains the citizens of Torrevieja and surrounding areas.
