La Siesta Bowls - Club Report Brian Langford being presented with his bowls towel from the sponsor, Kate the Newsagent in Torretas :
What a super start to the Winter League season by La Siesta especially against a known strong team from Albir. Harry Rhodes team came from 7 shots down, to win by 7 shots over the last 3 ends. Stewart Hamill’s team got off to a great start, but as you would expect a strong Albir team made a fighting comeback, getting to within one shot before Siesta managed to pull away again and win the last 3 ends to finish up 9 shots ahead on that rink.
P. Rhodes. M. Broughton, B. Gardiner, Jean Cooper. 18 – 13. There were no Berleen teams, so it ended up with a stupendous 10 – 0. and the shots ran out at 91 – 57. Another very good result for us was from our Apollos in the Enterprise League, when we were up against San Miguel Comets who were joint 4th position. With us having had 2 wins in the league, another one made Captain George Rothwell very happy. That ended up 124 – 86 with a win on 4 rinks and a loss and a draw to give us an 11 – 3 outcome.
J. Rothwell, I. Kadwell, G. Rothwell. 24 – 13. The Friendly ended up winning something like 30+ to 21 so Joy Gardiner, Ian Kenyon and John Mullarkey also went home very happy. It didn't go quite so well for our Pioneers at Greenlands, as half of them turned up at 10-00 a. m. for an afternoon game ? When they spotted Pete Bonsor in the 2nd Division team they must have thought “They must have a helluva first team?” and so it proved. To be fair we had a weakened team due to our change round system and a few drop-outs for various reasons, so we did’nt give ourselves the best chance away ? For the Pioneers, Peter Knapp, Jean Murphy and Norma Chambers deserve a special mention as they were the only winners. Pat Baylis, Kathleen Knapp and Ron Chambers had to fight heroically just to hold Pete Bonsor’s team to a 22 – 10 defeat, but they did win 6 of the last 8 ends. The scores by rink were :- Rink 5. 22 – 13. Rink 3. 10 -22. Rink 2. 14 – 25. Rink 8. 12 – 23. Rink 7. 13 – 25. Rink 4. 14 – 38. The final tally was 85 shots to 146. Not surprisingly Greenlands took the points 12 – 2. A situation we don’t wish to repeat !! Long overdue on Wednesday was the Chicken going to Tony Hobbs, the Wine went to Alan Cornes for a near miss and Carole Dunstan thinks a dozen Eggs are always handy. Info is scarce at the moment but I do know the Blues were up against it (as usual) at San Miguel, against the Jaguars, but acquitted themselves very well with a 10 – 4 win and a shot difference of 112 to 100. The Golds were at home to Greenlands Yellows won 9 – 5. The shots being 117 – 101. Let’s hope the run of luck lasts most of the season. This is my final report before I toddle off to a new ‘but and ben ‘ in Northumbria. It won’t be the same without you, but I’ll force myself to live with it. I would like to thank the President, Committee and members old and new for enhancing my 10 years out here and all the members in other clubs that I had the privilege to play against. I wish you all well. That especially includes the bowlers who are not around due to various medical conditions, to them, I would wish better health for you. All future reports should go to your new and very able scribe Steve Hibberd, but he needs your information and results. Without them it’s a ‘dog’s job’ and can get you extremely fraught. If anyone wants to get involved in the action, ring Jim on 690 190 523 it could
open up a whole new lot of doors to you. The club has it's own bar where light refreshments
and a library are available. |

Every year, each club holds its own Champion of Champions competition in many disciplines, these club champions play against champions from other clubs resulting in the champions for the Costa Blanca. In between all this activity we welcome many holiday makers to our green as it is possible to hire a green by the session. Touring teams from the U.K. are made to feel particularly welcome. We also provide a coaching scheme for individuals wishing to take up the sport for the first time. The first week of May brings the Spanish National
competition, not unlike the Nationals in England but on a smaller
scale. The standard of bowling is however very high, and whether
playing or watching it is one of the highlights of the year. We have
over the years had winners in the Spanish National's and regularly
have players selected to represent Spain in International matches. How to find the La Siesta Bowls Club in Torrevieja Torrevieja is served by two international airports.
